About Us
Hello! My name is Alex and that's me in the photo with my Devon Rex cat Keisha on my shoulder! Kaituna Cattery is owned and run by myself and my husband Robbie. We have been cat owners and admirers for many years now. The first cats we acquired were our moggies Piggley-Pooh and Spud, who we adopted as kittens when we moved into our first house together in 2001. Spud was semi-feral when we got him, and it took about 3 months for him to trust us and come out of hiding from under the couch!
Over the years I have been involved with animals in numerous ways. I have volunteered for several animal charities and rescues in the past, including at the ISPCA centre in Longford. More recently we have become involved in cat showing and at some stage we would like to become breeders of quality show and pet Devon Rex cats. We acquired our first pedigree cat, a Devon Rex called Keisha in 2006. Keisha is now an International Premier and a TICA Supreme Grand Champion Alter (SGCA)! Soon after, we adopted our second Devon Rex called Squeek. She has just become an International Premier also, which she achieved in six consecutive shows! Having become well and truly bitten by the cat showing bug, we have also recently begun showing Piggley in the household pet section, and he has also been doing very well to date.
Other breeds of cat that I admire are the Pixiebob, the Cornish Rex, the Ocicat, the Bengal, and the Sphynx!
Working with animals has been a dream of mine for a very long time. As a cat owner myself, I have often had to use a boarding cattery when going on holiday, and unfortunately I am often disappointed by the standard of catteries available in Ireland.
This gave me the idea to set up and run a boarding cattery myself. I spent many months researching the idea and finally applied for and was granted planning permission for a cattery at our home in December 2007. After several months of hard work the boarding cattery finally opened for limited bookings in August 2008. In June 2009 we opened some additional boarding units just in time for the Summer season.
We still have a small amount of work to be completed and a few improvements to make, but my hope is that we will eventually have the best boarding cattery in the area. Our priority is to provide a safe, comfortable and quiet environment for your cat so that you can have complete peace of mind when you go on holiday.
So if you're planning a holiday this year, consider Kaituna Cattery - we aim to be the purrfect home from home for your cats!
